Malaysia well known lawyer charged with failing to disclose information on asset

October 13th, 2007 · No Comments

It is very rare to hear of Malaysian lawyer being charged for criminal offence, espacially one that in relation to Anti-Corruption Agency (ACA).

Today most of the major local newspapers have reported that Rosli Dahlan, lawyer from the famous law firm, (a big law firm with about 70 lawyers) Lee Hishammuddin Allen & Gledhill was charged,  in KL Session Court yesterday, for not giving full information relating to his assets to the ACA. He was accused to be linked with an ongoing ACA investigation in relation to a senior police officer for having more than RM15,000,000 worth of assets.

Under the relevant provision, if convicted, he can be sentenced up to 20 years’ jail and fined a maximum of RM100,000.

Rosli was arrested on Thursday (11.10.2007) afternoon in his office and was handcuffed during the arrest. He told the court that the way the ACA officers arrested him and charged him right before Hari Raya was“calculated to humiliate him”.

On another hand, Malaysia Today reported that a ACA officer lodged a police report on Thursday alleging Rosli had used vulgar four-letter words and other abusive words on them when they wanted to arrest him.

There were about 20 comments posted on this article in Malaysia Today within 2 days.

However, Rosli had claimed trial to the case and the case has been fixed for trial on 21.4.2008.
