Malaysian Cyber Police

You have heard of police? But have you heard of cyber police?

In Karnataka, there is actually a Cyber Police Station. One of the provinces in China also have set up its Haikou Cyber Police Station.

Do you still remember in July 2007, Federal Territory Umno Youth head, Datuk Norzahas urged government to set up Malaysian Cyber Police unit in order to take action against the bloggers.

In view of the recent numerous arrest of bloggers, do we actually need cyber police in Malaysia now? what is the main duty of cyber police? is our existing enforcement body capable to deal with the cyber crimes now?

Lets start with the real function of a cyber police unit, I think no one would object if I say cyber police unit is a police department dealing with cyber crimes. The broad definition of cyber crimes is “wrongful act committed using computer as a tool or a target of the said act or both.”

As such, its seems that the basic requirement to join cyber police unit is IT saviness. As they may be required to hack into certain system or tracking the source of the visitors/users and so on.

However, in view of the alleged offences committed by the bloggers in Malaysia, most of them are in relation to making defamatory/seditious statement via computer.  This falls under the broad definition of the abovementioned “cyber crime”. But if you think further do we really need cyber police to handle this kind of case? The answer is obvious, No.

Nevertheless, in view of the rapid development of e-commerce in Malaysia, we still need cyber police to handle other cyber crimes like fraudulent online payment case, illegal hacking activities and others.

What do you think?

I think what you are really talking about is Freedom of Speech vc Censorship on the net.

No one has any issues about cyber police to track down internet chat room date-rapes, identity thefts vis-a-vis credit card frauds, &bank account hijackings.

Perhaps you already know that the WWW has appointed special agents world-wide to also monitor and counter malicious virus spawners and attackers - refer to an article in I think the June issue of Readers Digest.

As for freedom of bloggers to write whatever they like and make all sorts of accusations, most bloggers would defend it with their ives until they themselves individually become the target or object of defamatory and slanderous remarks.

However you look at it, blogging calls for self-restraint and responsible writing. Otherwise, you can be guaranteed that restraint WILL be imposed from without.

Shooting from the hip is not acceptable in a civilized world unless you hit bulls-eye.

    That’s my 10 cents worth!

donplaypuks - to me any sort of freedom should have its restriction so to ensure others are able enjoy their freedom too.

The point that I tried to make here is 1st, cyber police is necessary when it comes to dealing with some high-tech crimes. But the reason of calling the setting up of cyber police unit is invalid when the cyber police is meant to handle the bloggers who allegedly to have committed defamation/seditious acts.
