The 1st Malaysian blogger charged with sedition

In 2007 many Malaysian bloggers being sued and arrested (see here). After the general election in March 2008, government has actively show “friendliness” with bloggers, including ordering the leaders of UMNO to set up their own blogs.

Blogosphere in Malaysia has expereinced many events and changes since 2007. This is same to Raja Petra Raja Kamaruddin or RPK, one of the famous bloggers in Malaysia.

RPK was held liable in a civil suit for defamation in 26 March 2008 and he was ordered by the court to pay millions compensation. See here for more details.

Just 2 days ago, on 6 May 2008, he was charged by the criminal court with sedition.

Sedition Act 1984 prohibits any person to procure ill, hatred, contempt or disaffection feeling against the government or the Ruler.

As mentioned in my previous post, in Singapore, 2 bloggers were also charged with sedition in September 2005 for making racist remark online.

Yesterday, I was having lunch with one of my lawyer friend, he told me that he went to CIMB Bank and doanted RM10 to Raja Petra. So, have you donated?
