Webmasters/Bloggers Gathering in KL Sentral

November 18th, 2007 · 42 Comments

Wow…yesterday I have attended the 1st bloggers’ gathering ever. I must say it was exellent! A big thank to the organiser Webmaster Malaysia and sponsor- “Malaysian Godaddy” – Exabytes . I was there about 10 minutes before the “official commencement time”, surprisingly, I was the 2nd earliest attendee, just after MENJ.

The advantage of arriving early was that you always have the chance to mingle with the popular guys before others do.

The event started around 3pm with an overwhelming crowd of approximately 60 people.

Malaysian SEO expert, Lim CS was the MC.

The 1st sharing session was conducted by Hanson, Google’s country consultant for Malaysia.

I have managed to answeared a “700 millions” question, which made me won a google note book. hehe! Thank you, Lim CS.

It followed by Najib sharing about the CMS open source, Drupal.

Then came with the exciting sharing by the well known – Malaysian Home Internet Enterpreneur, Gobala Krishnan.

During the Q & A session, I was the 1st one to post question. I asked a question whereby no one is able to answear me. Wah! Am I smart? haha! (no lah). You must be curious what did I ask? ok lah, I asked “what is the current approximate number of bloggers in Malaysia?”

Although, I couldn’t get any answear to my question from the floor but being participated in this session, I won again a RM50 voucher from Exabytes.

After the Q&A session, we have about an hour to do networking and were treated by the generous Exabytes with free flow of Starbucks’s drink (any drink) came with the delicious refreshment. Yummy!

I have met some great bloggers during the networking session.

The story is not end yet, to tell you the truth, actually I just went to Starbucks last Saturday (9.11.2007). Why? err…I have actually mistaken the bloggers gathering date. When I arrived about 2pm on 9.11.2007, oops….the palce was abnormally quiet. I realised that some thing must be wrong… without 2nd thought, I called up Larry to verified the date of this gathering and was informed that the actual date was in fact next week 17.11.2007 (which is yesterday).

I think I should use the RM50 exabytes voucher to register a new domain name called www.BlurEddie.com for myself….

  • 2 Eddie Law // Nov 18, 2007 at 2:12 am

    Hi Edward,

Thanks for dropping by even in such a late hour 2.11am, haha!

Hope can chat with you one day.

  • 3 vangardx // Nov 18, 2007 at 2:31 am

hi eddie, do you want the answer?
ok according to me, there are 500,000 peoples that active in blogging via blogspot, wordpress, and bla bla bla bla platform..

    source : my brain :P

  • 4 Edmond Wong // Nov 18, 2007 at 2:54 am

    Hi Eddie
See you in msn messenger :)

  • 5 Eddie Law // Nov 18, 2007 at 10:33 am

vangardx- thanks for dropping by. I think the figure is quite close though as Adverlets is claiming they have about 1 million network, perhaps 50% of it is made up of overseas bloggers and advertisers. You see the thing is no official body or blogger is looking at the usefulness of this kind of information. In fact, many US sites are selling this kind of information e.g. eMarkerter.com and they are doing so well. I would be very interested to look into this area for Malaysian merket.

Edmond – sure, please add me.

  • 6 Kitkat // Nov 18, 2007 at 11:22 am

Anybody saw Kitkat at the gathering?

  • 7 Danny Foo // Nov 18, 2007 at 12:38 pm

    It wasn’t a bloggers’ gathering technically. :P

This gathering was coordinated in conjunction with the WebmastersMalaysia forum. So happens it was a great event for bloggers to attend to.

    I couldn’t attend sadly.

That sounds like an interesting meet.

  • 10 Eddie Law // Nov 18, 2007 at 10:56 pm

Danny – thanks for your correction. Yes, webmaster and blogger are different.

FH20 – yes, very interesting and benefiting too. Hope can see you too next time.

  • 11 Ashrufzz // Nov 18, 2007 at 10:57 pm

Didn’t had the chance to talk to you. You did however shot a picture of my back (the first picture) while I was registering myself at the Exabytes registration table..hehe..

  • 12 Eddie Law // Nov 18, 2007 at 11:32 pm

Ashrufzz – hahaha….apparently you have also shooted my back while I was talking to Liewcf. fair right?

  • 13 Kitkat // Nov 18, 2007 at 11:53 pm

    Cher… nobody shoot my back.

  • 14 Kitkat // Nov 18, 2007 at 11:57 pm

So, how great is this Malaysian SEO expert? His website can’t load when I checked it now… maybe Streamyx f*cked up again?!

  • 15 Kitkat // Nov 19, 2007 at 12:06 am

Oh… your URL there is wrong Eddie. It’s getfound.com.my.

But… I wonder why an SEO expert’s blog has PR3, alexa 344k; while his Internet Marketing company’s website (http://increseo.com/) has PR3 and alexa over 1 million?

Just curious ok… I think I can’t sleep tonight thinking of these strange stats. Maybe someone can share some inside tips with me?

    Cheers.

  • 16 Eddie Law // Nov 19, 2007 at 12:18 am

Kitkat – I will get Lim CS to anwear you since he is the expert not me. I have also fixed the wrong url. Thanks.

  • 17 Lim CS // Nov 19, 2007 at 9:08 am

KitKat: because those stats don’t mean anything? :D

  • 18 Wahlau.NET // Nov 19, 2007 at 10:41 am

very nice meeting you over at the WMG..

KitKat: I think it is easier to get traffic to your blog rather than a SEO company. More Traffic = Lower Alexa. Targeted niche Traffic = Higher Alexa

  • 19 Kitkat // Nov 19, 2007 at 11:22 am

    Lim CS,
Well then, I am a little surprised to hear you say that PR and Alexa do not mean anything while they are used by Internet experts around the globe.

So, how do you see how popular or successful is a website or blog?

Wahlau, Lim also has a blog.

  • 20 Larry Lim // Nov 19, 2007 at 11:55 am

Toolbar PR – delayed info that’s updated only every 3 months. Google uses over 200 factors to determine the rankings and not just PR.

Alexa – only tracks visitors who have the Alexa toolbar installed. Skewed towards tech and webmaster related websites, and can be easily manipulated.

Success of a website? High unique visitors, page impressions, earnings, etc. For blogs, all of the above plus number of RSS subscribers, community, Technorati rank, frequency of comments, etc.

  • 21 Planet Malaysia // Nov 19, 2007 at 2:04 pm

Anyone would like to share about the presentation slides?

  • 22 yogi // Nov 19, 2007 at 3:06 pm

I agree that a key success factor is how much actual $$$ u make from the website. Generally high traffic equates to big money but maybe this is not always the case, although I’d imagine such a case would be rare.

  • 23 hanafi // Nov 20, 2007 at 4:39 am

It was nice to meet you there, although didnt talk to you much.

  • 24 Maymei // Nov 20, 2007 at 9:44 am

    Sad :( I haven’t try the Mocha Praline =(

  • 25 Eddie Law // Nov 20, 2007 at 10:33 am

Hi Wahlau.net – wahlau eh…you are such a great blogger. Nice to meet you too.

Hi Planet Malaysia – may be you can ask the organiser, Lim CS.

Hi Hanafi – I believe we will meet again soon as Exabyes’ boss told me that they are organising a movie in KL soon and all those who joined the gathering will be invited to the show too.

Hi Maymei – so next time you should also join the webmaster gathering so that can get free drinks from Exabytes (any drinks in Starbucks menu)

  • 26 Eddie Law // Nov 20, 2007 at 10:35 am

Lim CS, Larry Lim & Yogi – thanks for sharing your expertise.

So Kikat, you have any more questions or doubts? since both the Malasyian & Singaporean SEO expert are here too.

  • 27 Kitkat // Nov 20, 2007 at 11:19 am

Who are the Malaysian & Singaporean SEO experts? Show me some websites which are SEO optimized to appear in the first page of Google.com in one or the most two phrases searches. Not long 5 words searches please. :)

Exabytes giving out free movie tickets? That’s cool, but I believe Exabytes can do much better than that… 10 earliest participants gets an iPhone for free for example. Wahahaha…

  • 28 someone // Nov 20, 2007 at 11:22 am

I guess that I’m a bit late for posting my comment.
Well, I guess this is the first bloggers gathering that I attended. And my impression is as below:
WOW!! All the famous bloggers do look just like us. Haha…. I mean they look like normal people. I used to have the perception that bloggers look like some computer addict. Hahaha…..
I’ll sure make myself available for the next gathering.
