What motivates most bloggers to blog?

January 23rd, 2008 · 15 Comments

Why do you want to blog? for hobby? for money? or got nothing better to do. I guess there are many reasons why one blogs.

Once I read a book, the author said there are, in fact, 4 main reasons motivate one to blog.

1. Fame

Most of the people want to be famous. Blogging is a kind of public media which can help you to achieve this easily (well, may be not that easy anymore now a day since there is almost 120,000 new blogs created every day).

However, you still stand a chance to be famous, if you:

1) are the 1st blogger in certain topic of a country (like me lah, the 1st law blog in Malaysia, hahah, just kidding. Like LiewCF, the 1st full time problogger in Malaysia),

2) blog about something really niche or rare to be found online (like, not sure who?),

3) making tanks of blogger’s friends by commenting on others’ blogs (like Kee Yit),

4) write something which, is really useful or, touches one’s soul. (like the problogger) and

5) you are so so special and unique in the blogosphere (the world eldest blogger).

2. Fortune

Money is one of the best motivator, so much so that it changes the original nature of blogging. Blog suppose to be used as online diary which is used to record the life or journey of someone but since Google invented the ingenuis Adsense, blogosphere has changed drastically, it was not so innocent anymore. (Actually when money come into picture nothing is innocent anymore). I think most of the blogger now a day blog for money, especially those do it as a full time job.

3. Philanthropy

In fact, I would think that people blog for the benefits of others should be a better blogger than for fortune, as they are pursuing the higher value in life. When you do something for a higher value than yourself (own desire), you are bound to achieve something great in life, just like the Chinese modern father, Sun Yat-sen, who has eventually changed the dynasty history of China. One of my learned blogger’s friend, a Canadian lawyer, Michelle aptly fall under this category.

4. Fun

I found that many college students are bloggers too as some of course do it for money but some just do it for fun (like Edward Khoo and  Esther Chin). Fun can keep someone doing the same thing again and again. If you find blogging is fun to you, congratulation, you are likely to be a great blogger too as the golden rule is you only will do something well if you really like to do it.

Of course, life has never been such clear-cut. Some bloggers may blog for fortune initially but he may be addicted to it later to the extend that he will blog about anything and everything he does or encounter in life. In such a case, “Fortune” may not the main factor motivate him to blog anymore but “Fun” is and vice verse.

So, what motivate you to blog?

kathiroly- Congratulation, gaining fun from blogging will definitely carry you a long way in your blogging journey.

Kitkat- So you better watch out con man…hahah!

IcedNyior-Thanks for dropping by my blog. I agree that it is very interesting rather meaningful to look back one’s diary.

Freethinker – You have chosen the right platform. Yes, I do agree that blogging can really sharpen one’s writting skill. I really hope it applies to me too. But I would said your reason for blogging is somehow interesting.

Hi Eddie, I replied your email, please check :)

I think my reason for blogging is simple, I wish to meet people who like web design so we can exchange idea and opinion.

I also wish to build a portfolio for myself to help in getting job offers :)

Thanks for the link, Eddie. Not so sure about the ‘learned’ part, though. ;-)

You’re right, at least in part. My first blog was, at least initially, all about following my passion (helping people with special needs deal with the legal system). I must confess that I am now hoping it might help me move professionally towards doing what I would really rather be doing. In a bit of a slump, work-wize, at the moment.

The second one is mostly for fun. I got tired of being professional all the time. And I enjoy discussing politics and world events so ….
Yeah, and by the look of this comment, I do like to just talk (write) too.

And I must confess I have a bit of a bias against those whose blogs are covered with ads. Give me a break, just go buy a billboard, why don’t you?

But what about you Eddie? I must have missed your reason for blogging?

lol! haha… cool! yeah, i blog for fun, like what you’ve mentioned :) i keep my blog as a dairy, things that i want to remember so that one day in the future, i may look back at the memories a.k.a. my blog and be happy that i noted incidents worth remembering down. :)

although sadistic, i’m a happy blogger.

hazel- nice to meet you too.

lukxiufung- I think very soon you will achieve this, based on the quality of your work.

Michelle – Frankly speaking, for me is the mixtured of the above reasons. It is hard for me to say which is more or which is less at this moment.

Estherchin- great to hear from a real “happy blogger”. Yeah I think for whatsoever reason, the bottom line is we must blog happily.

Edward- hold on to your passion. keep focus. you will sure be there 1 day.

Kikat- I believe as they are many full time problogger around. so I guess you should like this job very much.

i used to do this topic during my public speaking class, to persuade ppl to blog. haha…

well, i think the only thing that motivates me to blog is to keep in touch with my friends… and to share our ‘interesting daily life’ with other ppl around the world…

  • 14 Eddie Law // Jan 30, 2008 at 12:29 pm

serena – wow…what course were you taking? very interesting topic. Yeah, it is always great to share. Life is about sharing!

  • 15 serena // Jan 30, 2008 at 2:06 pm

i’m taking law too, just that we had this public speaking class, so, as a blogger, i love to share this thing with my friends too. Ya, it’s good to share~~~
