Sitiawan Kong Biang 光饼

January 1st, 2008 · 13 Comments

Have you eaten a kind of hard biscuit, so hard so that I can use it to hurt you by throwing it at your head. I guess you have not. However, such biscuit smells so good and tastes just excellence which is likely makes you can’t stop eating it once you have tried it.

Yes, the biscuit is “Kong Biang” (光饼), which is the speciality of Hock Chew.

Kong Biang was also known as “fighting biscuit” or “war ration” ( 打架饼) in ancient day. It was not really because one used Kong Biang as weapon to fight but rather it was the main food which the army brought along with them when they go for war. I guess it must be due to the hardness of the biscuit, which makes it easy to carry and store.

“Does it look good to you? Yummy!!!”

As mentioned in my previous post, I brought Yen Sang and the rest around Sitiawan. One of the MUST buy thing from Sitiawan is “Kong Biang”. This was one of the main reason attracted them to come all the way from Penang.

Kong Biang is 100% hand made. There are 2 varieties - one is with meat and another one is without meat only onions. The guy look at you is the BOSS!

Kong Biang is made with a very traditional way. Do you see the biscuits which are baked by sticking them on the wall of the “ancient oven”? Surprisingly they do not fall when it is ready baked.

Not only the way of baking looks traditional but the shop also looks traditional.

There are many shops selling Kong Biang in Sitiawan. Frankly speaking, I hardly tried others as I would have thought this shop is the best for Kong Biang.

So next time when you visit Sitiawan, please don’t forget to get some Kong Biang.

Oops…today is the 1st day of the new year for 2008. Happy New Year!
